The Artist

Leonhard R. Lang was born 1944 in Germany. His artistic talents, in particular his marked musicality, became evident at an early age. In spite of this, his education later took a technical direction, he was trained as a mechanic, became an industrial master, a technician and worked as Manager for operations scheduling in various branches of business. Music always accompanied him.
His first painting was created in 1973 - a water color. In the years previous to this, design in general, creative and artistic work had become of ever greater interest to him, stimulated possibly by his wife’s job in advertising. Numerous visits to galleries and museums, the study of art books and literature honed his appreciation for shape and color.
Further paintings were created rather sporadically, because of his job, but right from the start always in oil on canvas. His desire to express himself as an artist grew continually, due to his involvement with art and also as a counterpart to his technical side, which came to the fore in his professional life. His first paintings were pseudo-realistic and the quite intensive colors dominated more than the shapes.
His numerous trips to the United States resulted in a continually growing number of pictures in his mind, particularly inspired by the colors, the light and landscapes of the Southwest. More inspiration was given by the varied costal scenery, for example in Maine, Florida or the Pacific Northwest.

From 1993 on the artist painted more and more frequently and in 1996 decided to concentrate exclusively on his art. Now he was able to launch into his artistic work with full power and numerous paintings were created. The pseudo-realistic style receded.
Meanwhile rich, bursting colors glow from his canvas. Even in more reserved shades they develop a mesmerising effect due of their mysterious lights and reflections. This is also assisted by a sophisticated spatula technique, which opens the colors of many coats layered above each other.
The paintings of his “Lines” series are also fascinating. At first glance, they seem to be simple pictures, numerous vertical lines in various colors meet on an often darker background. The attain a special depth and suspense with the integrated “windows”, in which the arrangement of lines is repeated but staggered.
The charisma and creation of most of his paintings is the result of the apparently contrary but often surprisingly harmonic connection between technics and emotion. This is true for the paintings itself, but also for the intention and message of the artist:

Live with Art, for life.
